The Top 5 Burger Joints You Must Visit In the USA

When visiting America, you can’t leave without having tried one of the truly American meals – the burger. But you can’t just go anywhere and try any old burger. If you are going to experience the meal properly, you might as well get one of the best ones. So, where do you go, and which burger do you get?

The Emmy Burger – Pizza loves Emily, Brooklyn, New York

This burger is so special that they only make a limited number every night. You can’t make any modifications or substitutions because they know that it is perfect just the way it is and that’s how it should be enjoyed. In-between the two slices of the chewy pretzel bun is a dry-aged beef patty, aged Grafton cheddar cheese, Korean chili sauce and caramelized onions. If you can get your hands on one of these magnificently messy burgers, you’ll be one of the lucky ones.

Single Cheeseburger – Au Chival, Chicago, Illinois

With a steak knife stuck through the centre, even the presentation of this burger is great. This burger, although listed as “Single Cheeseburger” has two patties with pickles, cheese and a wonderful sauce. If you want to add a little something extra you also have the option of adding egg and bacon. As simple as it sounds, this is definitely one to go for if you are in Chicago.

Party Melt Burger – Better Luck Tomorrow, Houston, Texas

This burger is a James Beard Award-winning chef’s burger. It comprises of a juicy beef patty, broiled cheddar cheese, thinly sliced red onions and caramelised onions. Unlike most burgers, this one is served between two slices of home-made bread, made with Parmesan cheese. If you are going for something unique, this is the one to find.

The Deep End – Pool Burger, Austin, Texas

Pool Burger only has 8 burgers on their menu, so you know they mean business with each and every one. They are located inside a 1968 Airstream trailer, giving the whole place an awesome atmosphere. The Deep End burger has 3 patties made from Wagyu beef and is topped with bacon, Swiss cheese, Dijonnaise and jalapeños, giving you the great contrast between soft juicy patty, crunchy textures and a little kick from the jalapeños.

Cozy Burgers – The Cozy Inn, Salina, Kansas

Really simple burgers, these sliders still somehow match up to some of the best burgers out there. Topped with a delicious patty, cheese, sauce and onions it’s not too different from many burgers out there, maybe it’s the way they cook it or there’s something special in their sauce. Either way, these little burgers are incredible.

Whether you like small and simple, or big and messy, there is a burger for everyone somewhere in America, you just have to find it. Take your pick from the list above and you are guaranteed to have a wonderful experience eating your truly American burger. Book your accommodation and travel insurance with B4i.travel.

The Importance of Travel Insurance

Anyone watching events with Thomas Cook unfolding will realize why travel insurance is an essential part of travel. Thomas Cook is over 178 years old – it’s a massive brand in international travel, tours, and tourism.

Indications are over 600 000 people including 150 000 British citizens who are out on holiday and will need to be repatriated. Over 1 million flights and flight hotel packages booked have been booked for future travels.

Thomas Cook Plane in Flight

In this instance, Thomas Cook is a member of ATOL – Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing – a UK Civil Aviation Authority scheme offering customers financial protection from a member tour operator. So, customers and tour partners are protected.

ATOL does have its limitations though. It is only required for UK travel and it only covers travel companies that offer packaged holidays and flights. If you buy directly from an airline or, if you book a flights-only trip or even a cruise, you may not be covered.

ATOL – Logo

Thomas Cook is not alone in its woes, in recent years companies like Monarch, Primeria Air, WOW Air, XL Leisure Group, Niki Air and dozens more have filed for bankruptcy.

Flights and accommodations are not the only arguments for comprehensive travel insurance. Holiday-makers are often far more active; sightseeing, doing tours, trips, hikes and even adventure activities putting them at higher risk of accidents and injuries.

Unique Things To Do In Paris

When visiting Paris, there is a lot of possibility in terms of tourism. Apart from the obvious popular destinations, there are a lot of special things you can do and places you can visit to make your trip that much more special.

Buttes Chaumont Park

The park of Buttes Chaumont is far less popular than some of the other parks around Paris. Featuring a beautiful waterfall, a grotto, and a miniature temple, this park is a place that anyone travelling off the beaten tourism path needs to visit.

Butte Burgeyre Vineyard

Close to Butte Chaumont, Butte Burgeyre is a micro-arrondissement with quiet, cobble-stone roads. This spot is one of the best places to visit if you want some peace and quiet from the busy environment of Paris. There is even a nice vineyard here that you can visit.

Shakespeare and Company bookstores

Shakespeare and Company are actually two bookstores sitting next to each other. As some of the oldest English-speaking bookstores in Paris, there is a lot to find here. One has a vintage collection and the other is more modern. You will also be able to sit at the café which the bookshops run and have something lovely to eat or drink.

Seine picnic

Going for a scenic picnic along the banks of the Seine is an amazing experience. With a few friends by your side, you will be able to have a great time whilst enjoying your beautiful surroundings. It’s best to go in summer, early autumn or late spring as that is generally when it will be warmer.

Square de Monsouris

Square de Monsouris is possibly the most beautiful street in France. It is filled with art deco architecture and artists’ studios. There are some wonderful spots with vines growing on buildings and some of the buildings date back to the 1920s and 1930s.

Auvers-Sur-Oise

To the north-west side of Paris, you will find the little town of Auvers-Sur-Oise. This town is home to the final resting place of Vincent Van Gogh as well as his brother. It also has a museum dedicated to Absinth and a massive Chateau to visit. You can explore the area and imagine yourself in the time of Van Gogh as well as visit the actual inn where he died in 1890.

With so much to do in Paris, it can be hard finding the quieter destinations, but there is certainly no lack of these. If you know where to look, you have a whole other side of the beautiful city to explore and experience. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the busy locations, take a day to wander around the silent, beautiful streets or find a quiet spot to sit and read a book and just take in your surroundings.

Where To Go Snorkelling Or Diving In South Africa

South Africa is a beautiful place to visit. As beautiful as it is on land, you may find that it is even more magnificent under the surface of the ocean. Whether you are a shark-enthusiast, love tropical coral reefs, or just want to go for a casual snorkeling/diving session, there is something in this country for everyone. Below we have compiled a list of some of the best places to go.

Sodwana Bay

With warm waters and an abundance of tropical sea life, Sodwana Bay offers some of the best snorkeling sites in the country and even the world. There have been over 1200 species of fish that have been identified and there are some spots which are famous for their turtles. Although the snorkeling is good all-year-round, the best times of the year are during the summer months.

Plettenberg Bay

Along the Garden Route, you will find Plettenberg Bay. This spot is well-known for its population of invertebrates, offering an array of beautiful colors when you snorkel. It offers four different reef types to choose from and some great night-diving spots if you are interested in that. You can also snorkel with the seal population and watch them play gracefully around you under the water.

Mossel Bay

Included along the Garden Route is Mossel Bay. As you may have guessed, the invertebrate population here is quite extensive too. The shallow reefs attract many snorkeling enthusiasts and offer the perfect environment for beginners. With octopus, nudibranchs, colorful sponges and basket stars, this is yet another great destination to spot a lot of interesting sea life.

Aliwal Shoal

On the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, Aliwal Shoal is home to both warm-water reef fish and a number of cold-water species too. It is also known to have a good population of ragged-tooth sharks, so shark-enthusiasts would love this beautiful snorkeling and diving location.

Protea Banks

Protea Banks is south of Port Shepstone and is home to a number of shark species. During the summer months, you can spot more hammerheads, Zambezi (or bull sharks), and tiger sharks, while in winter you can spot a lot of ragged-tooth sharks. It also has swarming fish populations and beautiful coral reefs to explore, so don’t get disheartened if you aren’t solely looking for sharks.

Nelson Mandela Bay

The combination of the warm eastern current and cold western current of Nelson Mandela Bay offers a diverse plant and fish population and unique experience. When visiting the cold-water coral garden, you will be able to see many tropical fish species as well as some amazing jellyfish and octopus.

With an entire country’s coastline to explore, there is no doubt that you will have the experience of a lifetime. The abundance of sea life and beautiful coral reefs are intriguing to almost everyone and snorkeling or diving on one of them is something everyone needs to experience at least once. So, take a trip to the one that appeals to you most, grab yourself some gear (or hire some), and get out there.

What To Pack When Going On Safari

Is it your first time going on a safari and you aren’t sure what to pack? You might be wondering: “Do I have to wear khaki clothes and a pith hat like Professor Porter from Tarzan?”, and the answer is no, you don’t. Well, not entirely anyway.

Lighter is better, but not white!

Considering that you will be entering a hot climate, it is better to wear clothes that don’t draw in more heat. Therefore, lighter clothing is better. Yes, in this case it could be khaki but there are more attractive colours you can wear like greens, yellows, etc. White wouldn’t be the greatest idea for two reasons. Firstly, it shows dirt easily and, being in a sandy environment, you are bound to get marks on the shirt. The second reason is that you will stand out more to animals, which can be both dangerous as well as cause animals to leave before you’ve spotted them. Red is another colour that stands out to animals, so try to avoid that too. Make sure you avoid blue and black as well. Tsetse flies are attracted to these and they pack a nasty bite.

Shirts to be cool and to be warm

Shirts which you can stay cool in are great since the climate is mostly hot. Both short and long sleeves to use in different weather conditions. The short sleeves can be used when long sleeves will be too hot, and the long sleeves can be used when the temperature allows for it, as well as to keep mosquitos and other insects at bay.

Pants, don’t forget pants

You can pack both short and long pants too. You will be able to wear the shorts if you are at a lodge and the longs if you want to hike. It’s not a great idea to wear shorts if you are going to be hiking due to a number of dangers such as snakes, spiders and ticks.

A hat that provides enough shade

A hat that will protect your face and the back of your neck is ideal. The African sun is very strong, and you don’t want to get burnt.

A pair or two of shoes

If you are going to be hiking, you should ideally have some hiking boots, but if not, ordinary trainers will be fine. You can pack open shoes too if you will be around a lodge and want to keep your feet cool.

Strong sunscreen

You will need to protect your skin from the sun. Don’t make the mistake of forgetting sunscreen and ruining your trip with a bad sunburn. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF.

Special Medicine

If there is any medication that you take on a regular basis, don’t forget this, you won’t be able to “pop out to the shop quickly” to get more. You will also need to be aware of the area that you are going to. If there is a risk of getting malaria, make sure you consult a doctor before the trip to get the correct medication.

That’s pretty much all you need. Anything else you want to pack such as a book, a camera, etc. is up to you. Just make sure there isn’t too much, so you don’t have to lug around heavy bags wherever you go. Pack as little as you can whilst still being prepared for different weather conditions and situations and you will have an amazing time!

8 Places To Surf In And Around San Francisco

If you are travelling to San Francisco, there is a good chance that you will want to go to the beach. This may be the time in your life that you finally learn to surf, or you may be a surfer already and are looking for another memorable wave. Either way, there are a number of great spots to visit.

Fort Point

Fort Point is a great spot but should only be surfed by advanced surfers. Situated under the Golden Gate Bridge, you get stunning views. You will need to climb over slippery rocks to get there and you will have to time it right, as a strong current can pull out to sea when the tide drops. The locals have been known to be quite aggressive towards new-comers so try to be aware of that when surfing here.

Ocean Beach

This is also an advanced surfer spot. The long beach has four main breaks called Kelly’s Cove, The Dunes, VFW and Sloat. Waves roll in from the open ocean, meaning they are strong and unforgiving. When the surf is bigger, it can be difficult to paddle out as there are no channels to assist with the paddle. There can be quite a lot of localism so try to avoid doing anything that may offend the locals.

Stinson Beach

Stinson Beach is a great place for surfers of any level. The long beach has multiple breaks with waves that vary in size. Whether you are a pro or a beginner, there is something here for everyone. During low tide and when the surf is big, the waves tend to close out, so it’s best to surf at high tide or find a good sandbar to get a wave that runs nicely.

Mavericks

If you are reading this, you probably aren’t someone fit to surf Mavericks, as you would probably be travelling specifically for the purpose of surfing here. This is one of the world’s most famous big wave surfing spots. It’s a great experience just watching the few surfers who actually tackle these massive waves take the drop. If you manage to get a pair of binoculars, you could try to watch from the beach, otherwise you may be able to convince one of the boats’ captains to take you out with them.

Half Moon Bay

Although right by Mavericks, the wave here is easy to ride and can be surfed by beginner and intermediate surfers. There is a surf school close by, so you can have some lessons here too. Whether you ride a shortboard or longboard, you will be able to find some fun waves here.

Dead Man’s Point

Similar to Fort Point, the localism here is a bit over the top. The wave also requires an advanced surfer as there is a rock which needs to be avoided when surfing the wave. Due to the small take-off zone, it can get quite competitive, meaning you will need to know what you are doing in terms of surfer-etiquette.

Pleasure Point

Pleasure Point is a great spot for surfers of any level. The long, consistent waves mean there are plenty of opportunities for everyone but also cause it to get quite crowded. There is often a wave here when nearby beaches don’t have any.

Steamer Lane

Steamer lane, much like Pleasure Point is a point break and can get quite crowded. In order to get to the wave, you need to jump off the edge of a cliff and into the water, adding something fun to getting to backline. This wave is best surfed by intermediate to advanced surfers, as it runs quickly, and you will need to be able to read the waves well.

If you are travelling to San Francisco, take a trip to one of the many beaches for a surf. No matter what level you are, you will be able to find something that suits you and waves that you can have fun on.  It’s a beautiful place with so much opportunity for you to improve, so don’t miss out on any chance you get to experience it.
