Rugby Fever Hasn’t Broken As Cape Town Sevens Approaches

In case you’ve been otherwise occupied for the past several weeks, firstly, welcome back! Secondly, our beloved Springboks, in a moment of national unity, came out on top at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. The win incited a rugby fever amongst locals and expats alike, but it appears the heat is not close to cooling down yet. The annual HSBC Cape Town Sevens tournament commences in mid December at Cape Town Stadium, and rugby fans will have their second cause for breaking out their green and gold t-shirts, Black Labels and facepaint for the year.

The tournament has twice earned the title of South Africa’s Best Live Sports Experience at the Sport Industry Awards, and it’s small wonder why. With a party stand for the more lively revellers amongst attendees, as well as an alcohol-free zone for more family orientated fun, it seems there’s no reason that any member of the family shouldn’t join in on the excitement. There’s also a much anticipated line up of live performers, including both local favourites and world class acts.

Tickets for the event, running from 13-15 December in the Mother City, have been on sale since the end of July and are always highly sought after as the kickoff date approaches. This year’s appeal has the additional attraction of being the first time that the Springbok Women’s Sevens Team plays on their home turf. Heats run through the 13th and 15th, culminating in the finals on the final day, Sunday the 15th.

Yet another point for celebration amongst local rugby fans was the recent announcement that Cape Town will play host to the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2022, marking the first time the international event is played on the African continent. If the annual hype surround the local Sevens championship is any indication, the World Cup is sure to bring even more passion and intensity to Cape Town Stadium come September 2022.

So whether you’re a die hard rugby fanatic, or simply along for the spirit and fun of the matches, be sure to get your hands on tickets to the annual rugby Sevens festival this December. Tickets start at R150 and are already selling fast. Who knows? You may even catch a glimpse of a Faf lookalike, Speedo and all!

Best Blue Flag Beaches In The Western Cape

The search for pristine beaches might be hard in some parts of the world, but it is something that a lot of people strive to find. Fortunately for anyone visiting South Africa, Cape Town has 33 beaches that received the international Blue Flag status, meaning it’s fairly easy to find a beautiful beach in the mother city. Below are just a few of the many glorious beaches on offer.

Camps Bay

One of the most popular beaches in Cape Town, Camps Bay hosts beautiful white sand and is lined with palm trees, restaurants and bars, and extravagant houses. This beach is considered as one of the “to be seen” beaches with high-end cars rolling along-side the promenade and an abundance of tourists. You should visit this beach at least once on your trip to Cape Town.

Clifton 4th

Around the corner from Camps Bay beach and also one of the “to be seen” places, is Clifton 4th. While this beach can also become very crowded, there are times when you will be able to sit quietly alone, enjoying a cup of tea and a book. Even when it gets busy, this beach is still incredible to visit.

Llandudno

Llandudno feels as if it is more of a private, secluded beach than the likes of Camps Bay and Clifton. Being positioned between giant boulders and sitting right below steep mountains is what gives it this feeling. The white sand, crystal clear water and natural surroundings make this one of the best spots to relax. It is also well-known for its surf, so if you happen to be a surfer you’ve got amazing waves to look forward to as well.

Bikini Beach

Bikini Beach in Gordons Bay is a hidden and very small beach. With Sunset beach around the corner being more popular and much bigger, Bikini beach tends to attract a much smaller crowd and is mostly relatively empty. If you are looking for a place to sit and relax, you can do it here. Right next to it is a cute harbour and The Thirsty Oyster Tavern and Seafood Restaurant which you can visit for sundowners whilst you overlook the ocean.

Melkbosstrand

Melkbosstrand is a long beach which is suited perfectly for those sunset walks along the beach you have been longing for. Being quite a long beach, it tends to remain relatively uncrowded. It has a picturesque view of Table Mountain as well as Robben Island which means you can get some great new pictures. Much like many places in Cape Town, it can tend to get windy, which attracts a lot of kite surfers. So, even if you don’t get to walk along the beach, you can have a relaxing afternoon sitting in your car watching the kite surfers with an astonishing backdrop.

These are just 5 of the brilliant Blue Flag beaches in Cape Town that you can visit. There are so many more which you might prefer, just do some searching and you will find them. Some might take a little more exploring than others, but we assure you it will be worth it. You can’t go wrong.

South African Government Does Away With Birth Certificate Visa Requirement for Tourists

Minors visiting South Africa have less paperwork to worry about since tourism minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, recently announced that unabridged birth certificates will no longer be an incoming visa requirement. This comes after up to 20 families travelling from London’s Heathrow Airport were reportedly turned away from proceeding to South African ports of entry due to not meeting the visa requirements, which also includes parental letters of consent for underage children.

The shift was also made in hopes of increasing the country’s tourism sector and, working towards fulfilling the goal of a 21 million tourist headcount by 2030. The new legislature comes right before the upcoming festive period, a prime time for international tourism, and should boost the South African economy as a whole through resultant trade from the influx.

Source: itweb.co.za

The more lenient requirements have been extended to all ports of entry, including airports and harbours, demonstrating a drastic shift in postulation and procedure since the birth certificate requirement was introduced in 2015. Kubaye-Ngubane justifies the change by mentioning the previous concerns raised both by travellers and by locals in determining the visa requirements’ relation to a drop in tourism.

Source: lookoutpro.com

She went on to call the scrapping “an upside for industry and travellers alike,” and the motion has been approved by Minister Aaron Motsoaledi of Home Affairs. It’s sure that hope for the return of a busy tourist season in the summer months will be met with the same approval from both locals and those who will be flocking to our sunkissed shores and breathtaking sights this festive season.

It is important to note, children will still require a valid passport and a parental consent letter. You can download a copy of the official version here

Benefits of Having a Local SIM While Travelling

One of the often forgotten but very costly mistakes first-time travellers make is that they don’t use a local SIM card. A local SIM can save travellers in a number of different ways and ensure that their holiday isn’t ruined by unnecessary and easily avoidable situations.

Cost-Effective Choice

Using your usual SIM tends to rack up ridiculous roaming charges, dampening your post-holiday mood and putting a sour flavour to the end of a great experience. By using a local SIM, you avoid these charges and can easily make calls within the country you are visiting at an affordable rate.

But why not just connect to Wi-Fi all the time?

If you think that you can just stay connected to Wi-Fi wherever you go, and post to social media whenever you want, think again. There are a lot of destinations where Wi-Fi isn’t as readily available as you may think. In addition to this, you may put yourself in an irritating position where you need to make a call but can’t due to only operating on Wi-Fi.

A Point of Emergency

In some cases, there may be an emergency in which someone in the country you are visiting may need to contact you, for example, the hotel that you are staying at. Without a local number, this may become too much of a complication for some hotels, leaving you without potentially crucial information.

Solidifying plans

A local SIM is also a good way for a significant other, friends or family that live in the country to contact you. Since you will be staying in their country, you will more than likely want to visit or stay with them. A point of easy communication is the best way to make sure your plans with them run smoothly.

Don’t make the rookie mistake of travelling without a local SIM, just to get back home to another brutal expense after paying so much for your vacation. Be sure that you are prepared enough and can contact the people you need to as well as be contacted by the people who need you. By covering yourself like this, you will be putting another precaution in place so that you have the best-possible experience abroad.

6 Reasons to Visit Sweden in Winter

Sweden is a beautiful country. It isn’t hard to see why people from all around the world visit every year. As popular as it is in the summer months, there are more than enough reasons why you should visit in winter too.

More than 100 Resorts to go skiing

There are a total of 121 ski resorts in Sweden, offering slopes for different levels of skiers. Whether you are a beginner who just wants to learn, visiting with your family, or an experienced skier looking for the next best off-piste slope, there is something for everyone.

Reindeer and Moose

Much like Africa, Sweden also has a great set of animals which you can see on safari. The Swedish “Big Six” include wolves, moose, wolverines, lynxes, musk oxen, and brown bears. The tours allow you to spot some incredible wildlife and experience Sweden’s natural beauty in a way like no other.

Northern Lights

To add to the beauty of Sweden, you are even able to view the northern lights from the northern parts of the country. The best place to view the northern lights is from Abisko National Park thanks to the “blue hole” – a patch of sky that tends to stay clear even when other areas are overcast.

Sleep in Ice Hotels

There are a number of icy areas to stay but none beat the ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi. The hotel is rebuilt every year and is designed by a variety of artists. So, if you are a regular visitor to Sweden, you can get a new experience of this hotel every year.

Frozen Lake Fishing

Ice fishing is a great activity, even if you haven’t fished before. The water under the ice is often crystal-clear, which allows you to see your bait and see all the fish swimming below that may take it and become your first catch.

Snowmobiles

One of the best things about snowmobiles is that they aren’t difficult to use. This means you can take the family out on a snowmobile trip without needing to endure some of the physical aspects that skiing can have.

Sweden is beautiful all-year-round. Don’t stick to the summer months alone, visit when the crowds are thinner, but the potential experiences are still incredible – in winter. You will be able to experience the country without the hassle of getting through big crowds and in a way that many dream of.

A Packing List For Everyone, Going Anywhere

When the moment finally comes to pack for your trip, you will want to make sure you include everything that you are going to need. It wouldn’t be a fun experience to get to the airport, all excited for your trip, just to realize you left something as simple and as important as your ID at home. That’s why we have created an all-inclusive packing list to help you out on your travels.

The basic essentials

When packing, there are a few basic essentials which you will probably remember, but you definitely don’t want to forget. These include underwear, a change of clothes, important documentation, and a few other items. The basic essentials are things that, if forgotten, will make your trip fairly unpleasant or will cause you to miss your trip altogether. Following our list will ensure that you get to where you need to be and be comfortable on the way there as well as when you arrive.

At least one

There are a couple of items that you will want to pack at least one (or one more) of. No matter where you go in the world, the weather can always change. You need to be prepared for this. If you are going to a generally hot area, it’s a good idea to pack at least one jersey or a raincoat. Just because it is hot most of the time, doesn’t mean there is no chance of a sudden cold day or rain. You’ll be pleased that you prepared if something does happen, and the fact that you packed only one or two preparation items won’t add much to your luggage. Travel Insurance is also available with b4i.travel.

Things for the plane

Flights tend to get a bit boring and uncomfortable at times. You need to make sure you have items in your carry-on luggage which will keep you busy and comfortable. You’ll also need to remember that you will need to take your valuables onto the flight with you, just to be safe. Something as simple as earbuds or headphones can make your flight experience much more pleasant. As easy as it may be to ignore someone coughing on a short flight, by the end of a long flight you might feel very irritated. Earphones or earbuds can help with that, as well as help you to sleep better if someone on the plane snores loudly.

Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous items include things that you might not necessarily need but could make something as simple as plugging in your hairdryer or charging your phone simpler. Not everywhere you go will have the correct adapter, so this is a great item to include in your packing. Copies of various documents would also be a good idea to pack. If something happens to go missing, a backup can almost always save the day.

That sums up the kinds of items you may still need to pack for your travels. If you’d like to see all the items laid out for you to make sure that you haven’t forgotten anything, check out our packing list and tick off each one as you go through them. Have fun packing!

The True Experience of South Africa’s Wildlife

South Africa has so much to offer in terms of beauty. It’s one thing to visit the country and admire the nature, but to truly experience the wilderness at its finest, one needs to venture to one of the many game reserves scattered all over the country.

Kruger National Park

You can’t visit South Africa and not go to the Kruger National Park. Spread over 2 million hectares, the game reserve is one of the biggest in the world and contains all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo) as well as many other indigenous animals to spot.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Pilanesberg is one of the most easily accessible game reserves in South Africa. It is a protected area for the Big Five, so you can expect to spot a couple of these here too. Another great thing about this game reserve is that it is free of malaria, giving you one less thing to worry about on your travels.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Situated in the Northern Cape, Kgalagadi Tronsfrontier Park is known for its red sand dunes and dry riverbeds. The wildlife includes springbok and wildebeest which migrate according to the seasons, as well as predators such as black-maned lions and a number of raptors.

Mapungubwe National Park

Stretching over 28000 hectares, Mapungubwe National Park is a beautiful game reserve with great historical significance. There is a variety of wildlife and incredible views, and is well-known for the sandstone formations, baobab trees and riverside forests which fill the area.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Sabi Sands is a private game reserve which offers an up-close wildlife experience. Animals roam freely and there are plenty of possible leopard sightings which make this one of the most memorable game reserves to visit. The Sand and Sabi rivers flow through the reserve, adding to its biodiversity and to the experience.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five as well as much other rare-to-find wildlife such as cheetas, aardwolf, and brown hyena. The area is also free of malaria and has a very diverse set of animals, offering some of the best experiences when it comes to spotting interesting animals and their activities.

When visiting South Africa, it goes without saying that you need to go and see one or two game reserves. You can find yourself immersed in nature and spot incredible animals that you won’t see anywhere else in the world. It’s a once in a life-time experience that you will want to experience more than just once.
